Exploring new market potential for an established supplement

The challenge

The client saw commercial success with their current positioning but wanted to explore new indications to expand market share. What they lacked was a clear view of where real scientific potential aligned with real commercial opportunity. They needed a comprehensive review of the literature, a map of emerging therapeutic narratives, and support identifying the most credible voices in the field.

The analysis

We began by creating custom scientific search strategies to run structured, iterative literature reviews focused on uncovering publications related to novel and adjunct indications. Our team applied topic analysis to identify emerging clusters of research and linked these to unmet needs and plausible mechanisms of action.

To evaluate commercial potential, we overlaid the scientific data with epidemiological prevalence and burden-of-illness insights. The result was a ranked shortlist of viable new indications, each backed by both mechanistic rationale and market potential.

We then built an opinion leader map focused on those driving the relevant scientific dialogue. Using both publication metrics and digital presence, we prioritised engagement targets based on real influence.

The solution

The client received a clear, concise scientific landscape report tailored to their business questions. It included:

  • A thematic overview of novel indications linked to their product’s mechanism
  • Competitive analysis of other products operating in adjacent spaces
  • Prevalence-based sizing of each opportunity
  • A shortlist of high-impact experts to support future engagement and communications

The value to the client

The client gained a deeper understanding of the scientific and commercial whitespace around their product. Instead of guessing at the next move, they had a credible, data-backed shortlist of expansion options and a plan for validating them through future research and expert engagement.

Ongoing support

We continued to support the client by building a live scientific monitoring board. It tracks publications and KOL activity in the shortlisted indication areas, helping their team stay ahead of new developments and refine their expansion plan over time.

Simon Leigh
The most rewarding part of this project was proving that over-the-counter products can compete with more than just ad spend. When you combine rigorous literature analysis with strategic thinking, you uncover scientific narratives that not only stand up to scrutiny but also open entirely new doors for growth. It was a reminder that the right data, told well, can transform how these products are perceived and used.
